Based on the 1869 novel by Louisa May Alcott. Adapted six times into a feature films as well as several television adaptations.

Selznick began development for "Little Women" in late 1946. A studio strike and exhaustion after making the 1946 western "Duel in the Sun" led him to sell the property and the script to MGM. The script by that time had integrated Andrew Solt's screenplay with Sarah Y.

Mason and Victor Heerman's script from the 1933 George Cukor version. As well as using the Selznick script, the 1949 version retained Selznick's director Mervyn LeRoy, along with actor Elizabeth Patterson as Hannah. LeRoy was quoted as having said, Ever since I have been in pictures I wanted to direct Little Women... My fondest hope would have been to produce it 17 years ago when it was previously made at RKO. Winner of an Academy Award, and nominated for one more. Gray titled wrappers, noted as TEMPORARY SCRIPT on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 40, dated July 9, 1946, with credits for screenwriter Andrew Solt. Distribution page present, with receipt intact. 179 leaves, with last page of text numbered 178. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus, bound with three gold brads.
