An Officer and a Gentleman is a 1982 American romantic drama film starring Richard Gere, Debra Winger, and Louis Gossett Jr. Gossett won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the film, making him the first black male to do so. It tells the story of Zack Mayo (Gere), a United States Navy Aviation Officer Candidate who is beginning his training at Aviation Officer Candidate School. While Zack meets his first true girlfriend during his training, a young "townie" named Paula (Winger), he also comes into conflict with the hard-driving Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley (Gossett) training his class. The film was written by Douglas Day Stewart and directed by Taylor Hackford.

Its title is an old expression from the Royal Navy and later from the U. Uniform Code of Military Justice's charge of "conduct unbecoming an Officer and a Gentleman" (from 1860). The film was commercially released in the U. It was well received by critics, with a number calling it the best film of 1982.

About this Memorabilia - Its not a copy (This is the Original used on set to make the movie). Used by the script supervisor Maryann Newfield during the filming of An Officer And A Gentleman starring Richard Gere. Its the original script and it contains all of her notes while the film was being made. It's been in storage since 1981 and is now offered for sale. It is no doubt a true piece of film making history in search of a second owner who would like to call it their own. It's filled with the lines used in the film, lines not used and her notes which are a necessary part to filmmaking. The experience of sitting side by side and helping the director create this masterpiece on film was a milestone in her Hollywood career which led to many more films through the 80's and 90's. Learn about where the film was made at the following Wikipedia page and you'll appreciate the current condition of the script.

While in tact, edges of the pages as shown in the listing pictures were exposed to salty ocean air during the shoot as the weather was a bit harsh in the Pacific North West. The script has been in storage since the movie was made and its current condition became that way during the making of the movie, not in storage. Needless to say this stack of paper was the cornerstone of great film making and it depicts scenes never shot as well as on the spot changes via hand written notes on its pages.

In the last scene where Gere picks up Paula at the factory where she works in the movie and carried her away as her co-workers cheered and teared, Maryann has fond memories to tell about why the scene almost didn't make the cut, however it turned out to be one of the films best and most emotional scenes and very satisfying ending to a great story. Go to this link to learn more about where it was made. She can also sign it for you if you wish. We are also including a beautiful slightly used Wilsons leather biker/aviation jacket worn by Maryann during her career where needed to keep warm. This jacket has been stored in a cedar closet all this time and is in excellent condition.
