Screenwriter James Dickey was best known for his prolific work as a poet, as well as for the 1970 novel "Deliverance" and its subsequent adaptation for the 1972 film. "The Sentence" was inspired by Dickey's 1975 arrest after crashing into a utility pole. Novelist Ben Greer, who at the time worked as a prison guard and studied creative writing under Dickey at the University of South Carolina, also acted as an uncredited consultant to the script.
