The fill tells the story of American Grand Prix driver Pete Aron (Garner) who is fired by his Jordan-BRM racing team after a crash at Monaco that injures his British teammate, Scott Stoddard (Bedford). While Stoddard struggles to recover, Aron begins to drive for the Japanese Yamura (Mifune) team, and becomes romantically involved with Stoddard's estranged wife (Saint).

The film won 3 Oscars; Best Film Editing, Best sound, and Best Sound Effects. It also received 2 Golden Globe nominations; Most Promising Newcomer - Female (Walter) and Most Promising Newcomer - Male (Sabato).
